Key Aspects of the Consultation

  • Utilises ultrasound technology to help identify the location of existing dermal filler.
  • Allows for a targeted approach to administering the dissolving agent.
  • A plan involving a single session is often discussed.
  • Involves a detailed assessment of your specific filler concerns.

The increasing popularity of dermal filler procedures has led to a corresponding need for consultations about their management and removal. Most commonly used dermal fillers are gel-like products based on hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance that is also found naturally in the body. Synthetic HA fillers are used in procedures that address skin shape, volume, and texture. To address the presence of unwanted filler, a clinician can administer an enzyme called hyaluronidase to break it down.

At Shellharbour Skin, we offer consultations where the use of ultrasound technology is discussed. This process involves scanning the underlying tissues to precisely identify the location of the dermal filler before any procedure takes place. This allows for the targeted administration of the dissolving agent.

Individuals seek these consultations for various reasons, including dissatisfaction with an aesthetic outcome, concerns about filler migration, or in the rare case of a vascular occlusion (filler entering a blood vessel).

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect during the process?

On the day of your appointment, the Doctor or Nurse will scan the area with a handheld ultrasound machine. Once they identify and mark out the area for the proposed procedure, they will show it to you for your confirmation. Photos will be taken for your file before the procedure begins. The medical team will then prepare the hyaluronidase product and administer it into the outlined zones. Changes to the area may be noticeable shortly after the procedure, though this will be accompanied by bruising and swelling, which can take 2-4 weeks to fully settle.

What is the cost of this consultation service?

The cost of an ultrasound-assisted consultation and subsequent procedure varies and depends on the amount of product discussed and the area being addressed. We always require an initial consultation in our clinic to determine the cost of a specific plan. The Doctor can assess your areas of concern and develop a customised proposal based on your goals, health, and what you wish to discuss. As a guide, prices start at $245.

What is the process and aftercare?

The procedure is designed to break down hyaluronic acid-based filler. Sometimes, more than one session may be discussed. It is also common to discuss a subsequent consultation to address the change in volume once the filler has been dissolved. We will thoroughly discuss this during the initial consultation and agree upon a plan that outlines the estimated financial requirement. Unless there is a vascular occlusion, the decision to proceed is entirely up to the patient.

To support your skin post-procedure, your doctor or nurse will provide you with a follow-up plan, which may include:

  • Take pain relief as required.
  • Do not touch the site of insertion.
  • Give your skin a few makeup-free days after the procedure.
  • Do not exercise for a week.
  • Do not use active skincare products for at least five days.
  • Avoid other skin procedures that may cause stress on the skin, such as microdermabrasion or skin needling.
  • Stay away from extreme temperatures (e.g., saunas, ice baths) until complete recovery.
  • Avoid inverted positions and keep your head elevated for the first four hours.

Are there any risks or complications?

  • Allergic reaction
  • Scarring
  • Blisters
  • Swelling
  • Bruising

  • Redness

Sounds great. Where do I start?

Before any procedure, you must have an initial consultation with our qualified clinical team at our Shellharbour clinic. During your consultation, we will discuss your health and lifestyle, including your medical history, any allergies, and any medications or supplements you are taking. It is important to mention any past allergic reactions or recent aesthetic procedures you have had.

This consultation is your opportunity to ask any questions you may have. Your clinician will ask about your current concerns and your reasons for exploring this cosmetic procedure and will evaluate the area. You should discuss your aesthetic goals and what you hope to achieve. All the information you provide is essential for developing a customised plan that considers your health and objectives.
