What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes increased redness, flushing and sometimes pimples/pustules on the face. Some patients describe their rosacea as persistent redness, like a sunburn that doesn’t go away. Others can have small visible blood vessels on the face (usually the cheeks and sometimes the chin and nose). It is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that can possibly have a hereditary link.

Certain activities can trigger rosacea to become worse, such as sun exposure, stress, and certain foods. When rosacea flare-ups occur, this can be a source of discomfort and negative self-esteem, and in some cases, may cause physical pain.

Personalised treatment plans at Shellharbour Skin can provide much-needed relief from rosacea symptoms, restoring a healthier, clearer complexion. Dr Barney and his team aim to give patients a comfortable and supportive environment, with quality guidance and products to produce excellent results.

Causes & symptoms

Facial redness is the most common sign of rosacea, and this redness can become more persistent over time. Skin can become thicker, sometimes affecting the nose. It can also cause a burning or stinging sensation. In one subtype of rosacea, the eyes can be affected causing red, sore, gritty eyes requiring observation and treatment from an eye specialist. Many people find that their rosacea tends to worsen with age.

The condition affects roughly five percent of adults worldwide, and the onset is usually between 30-50 years of age. Although it can affect anyone, the condition is more common among people with fair skin. There are many different subtypes with different displays on the skin, and as a result, rosacea should be treated on an individual, case-by-case basis. Many people with rosacea find that certain triggers can exacerbate their symptoms such as:

  • Sun exposure
  • Stress
  • Heat
  • Alcohol
  • Spicy foods
  • Smoking
  • Exercise
  • Certain medications
  • Certain skincare products
  • Overheating at night

A medical professional will be able to assess your symptoms and diagnose the condition in order to recommend an effective treatment.

Rosacea consultation at Shellharbour Skin

Assessing the symptoms and possible causes of your rosacea is an important step towards finding an appropriate treatment. At your initial consultation, Dr Barney will inquire about your skin condition, including the severity and any past treatments you have had. This may also include a discussion about the possible triggers for your rosacea, such as stress, heat, or genetic factors. Additionally, you will need to speak about your general health and medical history, including any medications you are taking. Knowing this information will help us design a treatment plan that is appropriate for your health, skin condition, and goals. We will talk you through the process and ensure you feel comfortable with your treatment plan before proceeding.

Your treatment plan

At Shellharbour Skin, your doctor or dermal clinician will help you prepare for treatment and give you all the information you require to gain a successful result. Your treatment will follow the plans outlined in your initial consultation, based on your personal skin condition and desired outcomes. Since every patient is different, there are different treatment options available. Your treatment plan may include:

Dermalux Tri-Wave LED

Our excellent Tri-Wave LED device soothes and smoothens the skin to effectively reduce skin redness and irritation. Red and near-infrared light are most effective for targeting rosacea symptoms, giving patients a non-invasive and convenient solution to rosacea.

Broadband Light Therapy

Corrective Vascular BBL (Broadband light) is also a great way to reduce rosacea symptoms. The light wavelengths penetrate the skin and shut down the capillaries that cause redness and visible vascularity. Therefore, the skin becomes noticeably more uniform, and patients can enjoy less visible redness.

Prescription Medication

Some patients may benefit from medications, which can only be prescribed by a medical professional such as Dr Barney. These may be topical or oral prescriptions. If medication is a good option for you, we will assess and discuss this during your consultation.

Cosmeceutical skincare

For many rosacea patients, cosmeceutical skincare can provide a great solution and alternative to LED or broadband light treatments. A diligent skincare routine, including sun protection, will help rosacea-affected skin become smoother and healthier.

Results & aftercare

As your skin processes the effects of treatment, patients generally see gradual improvements in their skin condition, with less redness and irritation. Depending on your exact treatment, skin condition, and number of treatments, we may give you specific aftercare instructions. This guidance will help you avoid any risks after treatment and achieve the best results. For example, your may need to avoid sunlight, tanning booths, and heat exposure.

Aftercare may also involve the use of prescribed skincare products, selected specifically to suit your skin type and requirements. Good skincare habits and sun protection, particularly after procedures like BBL or LED for rosacea, will aid your skin’s health and help you get the most out of your treatment. Our range of quality skincare products which we may recommend includes:

  • Propaira Products (Micellar Cleanser, Dermaway Serum, Rozaway Cream)
  • Aspect Dr Soothing Skin Kit
  • Dermaquest Retinaldehyde Renewal Cream
  • Propaira Mineral SPF40 Tinted Sunscreen
  • Aspect Physical Sun Protection SPF50+

Speak to our friendly and experienced dermal clinicians to find out how your skin can benefit from a quality rosacea treatment and aftercare regimen. Once we have designed your personalised rosacea treatment plan, you are welcome to ask further questions to ensure you are fully comfortable and prepared.
