Microneedling Dermapen

What is Dermapen?

Dermapen microneedling utilises a device with multiple needles to vertically pierce the skin. It is most commonly known as skin needling.

Skin needling causes a controlled wound within the skin to encourage your skin’s natural repairing process. The result is an increased production of collagen and much healthier-looking skin. Dermapen can be used to treat an array of skin conditions including the appearance of fine lines, pigmentation, the appearance of enlarged pores, and scarring or striae.

Why do we use Dermapen?

Dermapen offers non-heat and non-ablative technology that eliminates the risk of pigment triggers and abnormal fibrotic tissue formation. Dermapen preserves the integrity of your skin, providing the most ideal balance between optimal results and minimal downtime.

Unlike ablative or some deeply resurfacing treatments, Dermapen’s fractional application does not cause skin thinning. Dermapen not only provides an alternate and safer option to many heat-based therapies, but its unique vertical stamping motion removes the ‘paddle steamer’ effect created by the angular needle insertion of rollers (often at a 45-degree angle).

Dermapen may safely be used on all Fitzpatrick skin types.

How does Dermapen work?

As the Dermapen is gently guided and glided over the skin, microscopic puncture channels are lightly stamped into the skin’s matrix, stimulating an inflammatory, or wound-healing response.

This promotes intense renewal, repair, and rejuvenation. Natural growth factors are released to stimulate the reformation and deposition of fresh restructuring collagen.

Dermapen directly targets three of our major cell types and promotes scarless wound healing via a controlled wound-healing response. The treatment is comfortable and provides effective management for most skin conditions, allowing simultaneous treatment of multiple concerns.

Preparing for your treatment

During your initial skin consultation at Shellharbour Skin, your practitioner will assess your skin and recommend products to use for 2-4 weeks before any treatment commences to prepare your skin.

For optimal results, we encourage the use of active ingredients such as vitamin A, exfoliants, and possibly pigment-inhibiting ingredients for some patients. This preparation process allows the skin to strengthen, speeds up the healing process after treatments, and certainly reduced the likeliness of complications.

Treatment Recovery & Post-Procedure Care

Dermapen’s vertical needle insertion and adjustable needle depth ensure a fast recovery period.

After a Dermapen procedure, mild redness that is like the appearance and sensation of a mild sunburn indicates successful treatment. Pinpoint bleeding may occur in some patients and is minimal in most cases. Some patients may experience minor itching or swelling in the treated areas following a Dermapen procedure.

Generally, on days 3-5 post-treatment, there may be potential slight dryness in the skin, with full recovery and normalised function from day 5.

Your Dermapen Journey

Microneedling results may be seen after just one procedure. A condition-specific and tailored treatment plan will be designed for you in your skin consultation. Your treatment programme will be influenced by:

  • The condition being treated
  • The location of the condition
  • How long the condition has been active
  • What combination therapies (if any) are to be used

Each skin response is unique. A professional consultation at Shellharbour Skin with one of our practitioners will establish:

  • Clinician treatment intervals (how often you may require treatments)
  • What depth of needles will be used
  • How many treatments may be required
