Dermaplaning

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning (also known as epidermal levelling, dermal levelling, or dermablading) is a non-surgical treatment that exfoliates and smoothes the surface of the skin. It removes dead skin cells as well as fine vellus hairs or “peach fuzz” in order to restore a clear and smooth complexion. The process is different from shaving because it improves the texture and appearance of the skin rather than simply removing hair.

During a dermaplaning treatment, a straight-edge blade is used at a 45-degree angle to remove the surface layer of dead cells and build-up. This provides deep exfoliation, resulting in smoother, glowing skin. It is an excellent option for event preparation or boosting your other clinical treatments such as peels, laser, or LED.

Dermaplaning does not stimulate hair growth or create stubble, it removes fine vellus hair and skin debris without stimulation. It does not encourage the regrowth of thicker hair and you will find that after six to eight weeks the hair will return to how it was pre-treatment.

Benefits of dermaplaning

One of the major benefits of dermaplaning is its exfoliating effects. By removing the surface layer of dead skin, oils, and bacteria, the treatment helps prevent clogged pores that lead to blackheads and whiteheads. As a result, you can enjoy fresher skin with fewer blemishes. Additionally, not only does deep skin exfoliation unclog pores and help reduce acne breakouts, but it also smoothes the skin and aids the penetration of skincare products.

Dermaplaning is suitable for all skin types and offers the following benefits:

  • Assists in improving the look of dull, lacklustre skin
  • Removes vellus hair or “peach fuzz”
  • Leaves the skin smoother and brighter
  • Improves the appearance and application of makeup
  • Boosts other treatments such as peels, laser, or LED
  • Exfoliates the skin, leaving a radiant, glowing appearance
  • Boosts your homecare routine

The results from dermaplaning are instant and there is no downtime involved. This makes it a convenient way to achieve refreshed, radiant skin.

Dermaplaning consultation at Shellharbour Skin

At Shellharbour Skin, we understand that every patient has different treatment goals and requirements for their skin. Therefore, we tailor treatments to the patient by first discussing their needs in an initial consultation. You can discuss your skin condition with us, your concerns, and what you hope to achieve from a dermaplaning treatment plan. You will also need to inform us of any medical or skin conditions so that we can cater to your needs, as well as any medications you are taking. This information will allow us to determine the best treatment approach and make recommendations based on your health and skin concerns. We will explain the requirements of treatment, both before and after, and discuss the number and/or frequency of treatment sessions to achieve the best results.

What to expect

Once we have decided on a treatment plan that meets your needs, we can schedule your first dermaplaning treatment session. You can prepare for your procedure by staying hydrated, avoiding sun exposure and tanning beds, and refraining from waxing and exfoliating. You should also make sure that your skin is free from cuts and wounds.

One of our skilled and friendly clinicians at Shellharbour Skin will cleanse and prepare your skin for dermaplaning. A specialized blade is used to exfoliate the top layers of the skin gently but thoroughly, revealing a layer of fresher skin beneath. Clients describe the treatment as comfortable and relaxing. The smooth layer of skin is then better able to absorb healthy skincare products, leaving the skin looking fresher, smoother, and more rejuvenated.

Cost of dermaplaning treatments in Illawarra

The cost of a dermaplaning treatment is based on the patient and their personalised plan. Dr Barney will assess your skin during your initial consultation and determine the best approach for your skin type and condition. This may involve several treatment sessions and personalised skincare product recommendations. Since costs can vary between patients, depending on the exact products used, as well as the number of treatment sessions, we can provide further details on costs during your consult.

Results and aftercare

The results of dermaplaning are immediate. However, your skin will be slightly sensitive afterwards, so you will need to wait for your skin to heal before you can enjoy the full benefits. Once the skin heals, patients notice a smoother skin texture and a more vibrant overall texture. This aids the smooth application of makeup and gives the face a vibrant, glowing appearance. Dr Barney will advise the best products to use post-procedure to help you get the most out of your dermaplaning procedure.

The procedure is quick and does not require any downtime, meaning you can resume all of your normal daily tasks and routines. You should keep in mind that the results of dermaplaning are not permanent, since dead cells continue to accumulate and vellus hairs grow back. The procedure generally removes about three weeks’ worth of dead skin cells. This means you may require follow-up treatments if you wish to maintain the smoother skin texture achieved with dermaplaning. We recommend treatments every four to six weeks for the best results.

Risks & complications

Although this procedure is low-risk, there are some common side effects to be aware of. This can include mild redness and sensitivity. Rare risks can include breakouts, infection, and scarring. For this reason, patients who have severe active acne or are prone to keloid scarring are not generally suitable for dermaplaning.

There are ways you can prepare for your treatment to minimise risks. For example, before treatment, you should make sure that you don’t have any cuts or open wounds on the face, as this can increase the risk of further injury or infection. You should also follow any instructions given by your clinician, including the application of skincare products. If you notice any prolonged or concerning symptoms, contact us and we will advise you further.
