What are MONO Threads?
PDO (polydiaxanone) monofilament (Known as MONO Threads) are fine threads, likened to dissolvable sutures. They create collagen when inserted into the treatment areas. This means, MONO threads are yet another form of collagen stimulating treatments available. At Shellharbour Skin, MONO threads are most commonly used in combination with Lifting MINT Threads.
Mono threads come in a single or double thread (known as double screw). Double screw threads are for areas that require extra support, such as the nasolabial folds and marionette lines. A combination of single and double screw MONO threads is usually required. It is important to note that the treatment for threads requires multiple sessions, with 8 weeks apart, and the area needs many threads to achieve a satisfactory outcome. The treatment will not work if the thread count is too low.
While being relatively new to the Australian aesthetic space, practitioners in Asian countries have been using Mono threads for 20 years. Mono threads have a very high safety profile, minor risk and yield significant results when combined with other modalities such as laser, radiofrequency micro-needling and MINT lifting threads.
The most common areas for treatment with Mono threads are full face and neck. Postpartum abdomens are another great option for Mono threads, to firm and tighten skin.
A Registered Nurse or Doctor performs mono thread treatments using a sharp needle that has the thread attached. The Registered Nurse or Doctor inserts the needle, and they leave the thread behind in the very superficial layers of the skin.
