Fast, In-Clinic Treatment for Sun-Damaged Skin and Superficial Skin Cancers
At Shellharbour Skin, Dr. Barney Gordon offers Photo Dynamic Therapy (PDT) as an advanced treatment option for sun-damaged skin and superficial skin cancers. PDT combines a photosensitising agent with light activation to destroy abnormal cells selectively, while sparing healthy tissue.
What is PDT?
PDT involves the application of a photosensitising cream, Aminolevulinic Acid (ALA), to the affected area. Exposure to a specific wavelength of light then activated later the agent in the day, targeting and destroying only the abnormal cells. PDT is effective for:
- Actinic keratoses (precancerous skin lesions)
- Superficial basal cell carcinomas
- Intraepidermal Squamous cell carcinoma (Bowen’s disease)
How Does PDT Work?
The treatment is performed in two 30-minute appointments on the same day, three hours apart. During the first appointment, the photosensitising cream is applied to the skin and covered with a dressing. After three hours, the dressing is removed, and the area is exposed to a powerful LED light, activating the agent and selectively destroying the abnormal cells.
Benefits of PDT
- Non-invasive, in-clinic treatment
- Effective for treating sun-damaged skin and superficial skin cancers
- Excellent cosmetic outcomes with minimal scarring
- Quick recovery time
What to Expect?
Post-treatment, the treated areas may appear red and inflamed, similar to a sunburn. This reaction is normal and indicates the treatment’s effectiveness. Dr. Gordon will provide detailed aftercare instructions to ensure optimal healing and results.
